We spent 854 of these days here in Colorado - Boulder County (629 in 6 different places), Denver (114), the Breckenridge vicinity (79) and Durango (32)

The next most visited places were New Mexico (239), Washington (187), British Columbia (66), New England (53) and Montana (35)

Amongst the most memorable moments: getting back to my hometown Hamilton, getting back to New England, being in British Columbia for the 2010 Winter Olympics, being in Vancouver for the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, the Fourmile Fire and Burro Days

For the final post I chose a collection of photos from our travels, and it was a lot of fun looking back. Which was the point of this blog - a diary of sorts

Thanks to family and friends who stopped by - Ma & Pa, Josh, Gary, Chuck, Erik, George and so on. Thanks to my bosses Bill Hague & JR for allowing this way of working

And thanks to Maureen & Hudson for four fun years...

I decided to skip the Breckenridge half marathon this year for a few reasons, including trying to move away from always being so competitive with myself and to simply enjoy the race - the social aspect and the seeing of new places. It's also possible that my subconscious wasn't so sure that I was in as good running shape as last year

Anyways, signed up for a local and relatively flat half marathon in Erie. It was perfect; ease the guilt of skipping my "big" race and then enjoy a party up in Jamestown later that evening

I had hoped to get a good sleep - unlike the lousy night before the Jemez - but after only 40 minutes I was awake until 2am. At 1am I had decided to skip the race and turned the alarm off - but woke up anyways at 5:30am

My plan was to run at a sustainable race pace and see how it went. For the first time this year I ran a race with my iPhone and used my GPS apps - MapMyRun will talk to you after every mile in a very robotic female voice and tell you what your pace is. Surprisingly I was running sub 7:30 miles at an easy enough effort so decided to keep it up until I hit a wall. More surprisingly I never did and ran a 1:38:31 - good for 10th place (it was a small town race). It was also a very consistent run, with all miles between 7:06 (mile 2) and 7:42 (mile 13)

On Thursday I went for a run with Leadville Chuck and Woody and we were talking about the Breck half - started feeling pangs of being a pussy. I signed up later that evening

Was tired Saturday night so headed to bed early, dreading the now ritualistic nightmare of insomnia. Sure enough, after 3 hours of nothing I grabbed a beer, a smoke and turned off the alarm. Or so I thought - I had only turned the switch from "radio alarm" to "buzzer alarm". I actually ended up getting a decent enough sleep, so off I went

My plan was once again to run at a sustainable race pace and see how it went. The obvious difference is being above 10,000' with 3,000' of gain, so some sort of strategy was needed

The first section is half a mile on the street before heading up the Burro Trail and then on Spruce Creek Road - all-in maybe 1,400' of the gain over 4.5 miles. As in prior years ran about 95% in 47 very consistent minutes. My first Breck half I had run this section in 48 minutes but faded badly in the second section, whereas last year I had run it in 51 minutes at an easy pace and did much better later

The second section is 2 brutal miles with 1,600' before topping out for a 0.7 mile stretch at 12,500'. I was running in a small group of two guys - one with a serious sounding breathing issue like he may need to be rescued - and one gal. We all ran until the very steep section. I had worked on my hiking this summer - I found out that hiking uses some different muscles than running - so the 1,000' / one mile stretch went from being completely dreaded to somewhat fine (not fun). Ended up finishing this section in 44:15 and was now 5 minutes ahead of last year's time

The final section is essentially all downhill - 3,000' down over 6.5 miles. I passed one guy right away and then only saw one other person. The first mile is a pretty rocky jeep trail but the next four miles are very nice and I was running 7:XX miles (even got a 6:XX mile in). By the final aid station my quads were hurting - and a woman passed me seemingly out of nowhere. I chased her over the final 2 miles - which is a trail system in a rich residential area (all of Breckenridge near the slopes is a rich residential area) - but no luck. Still, did this section in under 50 minutes and came in at 2:21:04 for 8th place

As I was heading out of town I saw a 60+ year old fellow obviously suffering and struggling down the street to the finish. Gave him a few honks and he gave a wave. His effort was much more awesome - good job, Norm Stein...

This is the fellow with the breathing issue - that's me in white coming up behind
Went up to Rollinsville today and ran from the East Portal TH to Rogers Pass. 11.5 miles RT with 2,700' - which seems like nothing on this major race weekend in the area - the Leadville 100 (100 miles with 18,000') and the Pike's Peak Marathon (26.2 miles with 7,600')
If we do close on the house, it will be the end of this blog. We started it to have a record of what was going to be a 6-month cross-country trip that has now gone on for 4 years now - although the past 2 years has been spent mostly in Colorado, New Mexico or Seattle. It was also a fun way for our parents and friends to follow along

With trail running we see some amazing places but the iPhone camera doesn't quite capture what we see. We'll probably start a photo blog when we get a better camera. Plus, without this blog we would have lost all photos from the first year since we lost both cameras in the fire. It's a nice back-up systemcharveyuwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253412262596307079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984522978387193529.post-7926907582354818352013-08-12T09:56:00.001-06:002013-08-12T11:46:03.561-06:00Meadow MountainHudson's 13th Green Mountain
We were startled by - and startled - a moose who was alongside the trail. It's hard to tell what he was thinking - he never took his eyes off us. We moved on and skipped the photo op
Sunday we headed to St. Vrain Mountain TH. After a mile Maureen's knee wasn't doing well with the rocky trails, so she went to Camp Dick to hike on Buchanan Pass. After I hit Meadow Mountain I would come down the south side into the the Indian Peaks Wilderness and meet up with her
Headed down the St. Vrain Mountain trail but lost it after awhile - a lot of fallen trees. Got the compass out and figured as long as I kept going down and to the SE all would be OK. There is no cell coverage in the Wilderness areas. It was disorienting, coming down a few thousand feet off-trail in the woods over large fallen trees that cut the heck out of my legs. After an hour I didn't know where I was and all I could see were trees. I assumed I was close as I could here ATVs, but I was on top of a rocky ledge and wasn't keen on scrambling down with no one around. So with maybe an hour of phone battery left I decided to retrace my route back up using MapMyRun (GPS app). The battery died just as I made it back up top

Ran the 4 miles back to the St. Vrain Mountain TH and started running to the town of Allenspark. I was now 2 hours late and had run something like 17.5 miles with 4,600' of climbing with 10 miles to go - although I assumed hitch-hiking was a good option. Sure enough, after a mile or so a USFS Ranger was driving up so I flagged her down and hitched a ride to Camp Dick

Looking at the GPS later that evening on my computer, I was only 300' away and 700' above a trail. Sigh

Bought COSAR (Colorado Search & Rescue) cards for us later that night just in case...

On the way up stopped off in Nederland for the Eldora 10K - a tough little course at 9,200' with 950' of gain. 53:34 for 26th / 151
Running down from the summit, I took a head-over-heels tumble down the large boulders. Got up a little disoriented and had to figure out where all the blood was coming from. All fine
Small town races are awesome - this one had good food, a bluegrass band and a tough little course. And door prizes - won a 2-hour guided horse ride

I saw that last year only two people had broken 50 minutes so decided to go for the win. I wasn't aware that there was 750' of gain over rolling hills and came in 4th at an 8:10 pace (did not break 50)
The home purchase was delayed a week as our landlady (the seller) had to replace some pipes and had some other issues - but we are finally under contract

Finally did South Boulder Peak today with Leadville Chuck and a buddy of his, Woody. I wondered how Woody - a marathoner who qualified for Boston but doesn't really run trails - would do. He kicked our ass and made it to the summit 8 minutes before we did. Anyways, had read it was a 6.7 miles RT with 3,000' - the gain was right but it ended up being 9 miles as Homestead & Towhee have been re-routed (seems pretty permanent)

Damage from last year's fire
My goal was to break a 7-minute mile pace. Missed by one second. Booo!
I come across at 5:28 in this video. It doesn't look like I'm going very fast. I had envisioned myself looking more like the guy who came across at 5:38. That guy is awesome
We will be buying the house we've rented off-and-on the past few years. Given the wife is excited I was able to negotiate that the next house we buy in 5 years will be in British Columbia. This will be our view every evening until then (assuming nothing fucked up is found during inspections)
I was going to take today off for a celebratory Canada Day mountain run, but the back was sore - the usual, not enough stretching or core work. Sunday I ran a 10K at Pojoaque Pueblo. The Pojoaque run two casinos here in the county, including the massive Buffalo Thunder

The 10K was a great time and very organized. Plus great shirts. It had a community feel - tons of volunteers from the Pueblo. Water every mile. The course was gently rolling dirt roads and went well - 45:17 for a 7:17 pace and 18/85 (maybe). Even a medal for age group
Went to the town of Pecos after. Pecos is kind of a gateway to what is supposed to be an awesome wilderness area but is off-limits due to fires (including the one above). The town was like many of the rural Northern New Mexico we've visited - nothing fancy and a touch of Catholicism
Unfortunately there are two large fires near Santa Fe - one in the Pecos Wilderness and one in the Jemez Mountains. They've been burning over a week now. I had hoped to run Pecos Baldy and to a ghost town but they are now off limits
Work was a sweat shop this week as budgets were due Thursday - so took Friday off and went for a run at the Dale Ball trails

Monday they are closing the Sandias (fire risk) so ran La Luz today. I heard about the La Luz trail race - a 9-mile race that only goes up - over 4,000'. You can either run back down (Hahaha) or take the Sandia Peak Tramway

My Sierra Club "Day Hikes" book was very specific - if I started at the lower tram and took a detour to summit Sandia Crest (10,678') and then on to the upper tram, it would be 8.9 miles. Somehow it ended up being 11.9 miles with 4,567'

The first few miles were pretty easy

The next 5 miles or so were enjoyable although no shade. Sandia Crest is on the top right - you can faintly see the towers

After 7 miles hit some shade and it was very pleasant for a mile

After a mile running over large rocks it was a short steep hike to the summit. The views were great but the summit was lame - a parking lot and gift shop

1.5 miles later and I was at the upper tram just as Maureen arrived

The week was perfect - we were rested and injury-free. We had been sleeping and eating well. The night before we were all packed and ready to go. Only one thing left could cause havoc - insomnia

4 years of playing pro hockey and sleep was never once an issue. It's not as if I am worried about winning (hahaha). Yet it is an issue for me running non-local half marathons. Best guess is it's not the race but having to wake up early and a mind that doesn't shut up - I end up doing math and can't stop it ("if I fall asleep in the next 30 minutes I'll get 6 hours sleep and...")

I did fall asleep 3 times and as early as 9:15 but woke each time within a few minutes. By 2:30am I had grabbed a beer to go with my cigarette - stolen from our post-race celebratory stash. Next thing I knew it was 5:15am. Breakfast was not terribly enjoyable but got about 500 calories and off we went

My goal going into the race was to beat 2:30. I hadn't really worked as hard this year running "fast" for much longer than 7 miles. Which was OK - I had fun lolly-gagging in the wilderness. It just meant I had no expectations of beating last year's 2:18:23

The race is so mellow and the volunteers so cool that it was easy to get into the spirit. The half-marathoners are a mix of some serious runners but mostly locals and others in it for the challenge. It was already warm when we lined up and just after 8am someone said something like "OK, go" and off we went

Last year I went out fast and did the first section (4.2 miles with 721' of gain and 555' of descent) at a 7:58 pace. This year I kept it mellow and was in a good group going at a fine pace. I would guess we did something like an 8:30 pace

The second section is brutal. 2.2 miles with 1,540' of gain in the exposed sun. I got to the top and asked what time it was. It was either 9:11 or 9:13, can't remember. At the the time I thought I was about 6 minutes behind last year but was actually only 3-5 minutes behind. Woo-hoo! The crux of the race was done

The third section is 5.3 miles with 1,792' of descent. Last year I did this section at an 8:29 pace. I would guess I met or beat this pace. I ran with one guy for about half a mile. It was his first Jemez. We talked about our goals. He said his was now 2:20. I told him mine was 2:30 and he said how that was no problem. I didn't break his spirit - we were 1:40 into the race with about 4 miles to go, including two sadistic hills, and he was not going to make 2:20

About a half mile from the final aid station I started to fade and was aware that I was dehydrated. I was a mess at the aid station. I filled up with water although my bottle was mostly full and grabbed a strawberry that I spit up

The final section is 2 miles with 426' of gain - with a 200' hill leaving the aid station and a 100' rock waterfall (dry) at the very end. Last year I did this section at a 12:26 pace - was definitely slower this year. I was in such horrible shape by the end that once I reached the top of the waterfall I thought I heard a runner coming up behind and moved aside. But it wasn't a runner. It was a 70-year old woman walking who said "Oh I'm not a runner dear, I'm just a spectator"

The final tally was 2:26:45 for 42/229 - 8:22 or 37 seconds per mile slower. I'm totally satisfied and left it all out there

Maureen beat last year's time by 6:24. It was 80F when she finished. More importantly she went from announcing her retirement from racing to committing to the 2014 Jemez within 30 hours
We came up to Breckenridge Tuesday. I shouldn't have complained about the snow in Boulder. Had thought we could train by running up Quandary Peak. HAHAHAHA!
Tonight we were able to watch the CBC feed of the Toronto-Boston Game 5. Lost a beer-and-shot during Game 4 to my old goaltending partner who's now a successful doctor in Boston. Did get an invite to Toronto if they make it to the finals from a couple of old teammates. Hockey is great...
Ottawa at Boston. The boys came through and we moved up to 2nd place - good for $110 and some well deserved pride. Celebration of the $110 goal

Then Jesus took my happiness away by sending the 5th snowstorm of at least 12" during our 30-day spring stay in Boulder - days after it was 75F and sunny

Even more confusing - the Vancouver Canucks are down 2-0 while the Toronto Maple Leafs just tied their series with Boston 1-1. It seems so long ago that Vancouver were awesome - but it was only two years ago we were in Vancouver celebrating (before the riots)
We head to Breckenridge Tuesday for a few weeks before back to Santa Fe for the Jemez Half. After that - no plan. Hopefully a Canadian team will be in the Finals and we will head there
We leave for Boulder tomorrow which is fine - but we've had two months of sun and mostly snow-free trails which allowed me to run 360 miles with 51,000' of gain. Santa Fe is also back as a potential landing option

Hud will miss Galisteo. He met lots of buddies - especially female buddies

The Hermit was an educated nobleman named Juan de Agostini who lived in a cave near the summit in the mid-1860s, possibly in a self-imposed penance for some indiscretions back in Italy. He traded carved crosses for food and the locals - who were big fans - would hike to the top to receive blessings and healings. Visits by religious folks still continue

It is less than an hour drive to Las Vegas and then 15 curvy miles before the tiny mountain towns of Gallinas and El Porvenir

Maureen was not pleased with the cold and occasional strong winds. We had planned to run 90 minutes then turn around so we would be back at the car at the same time. I left her messages in the snow such as mile markers. On the way back I came across this - someone had turned back a little early
Today ran on the streets from the markets to East Alameda and Canyon Road
Running the streets of Santa Fe is a great way to see things you'd miss in a car, especially with all the alleys
There are three within an hour drive - the Sangre de Cristo, the Jemez and the Sandia - and we hit them all

Friday we ran Atalaya. Ended up 6 minutes shy of my best time last May so was pleased - especially since I had to put traction on for the last mile and was confused by the "L". After putting the "L" on my left foot I was baffled how I still had an "L" in my hand. So I switched. Finally realized "L" stood for Large, not Left

Afterwards we went to the town of Lamy just 5 miles past our house. Population: 137. It has a railway museum and for some reason an Amtrak station. Lamy also has a small claim on New Mexican folklore

There are multiple accounts, particularly in the Santa Fe New Mexican at the time (March 26, 1880) of a sighting of a "fish-shaped balloon" which contained "about ten human occupants" from which was heard singing, music, and shouting "in an unknown language". A rose tied to a letter written with "unknown characters" and a cup of "unusual workmanship" were reportedly dropped from the vehicle. According to accounts, the following day a person unknown to residents purchased both items for "a large sum of money", declaring them "of Asiatic origin"

Even has it's own entry in the URECAT (UFO catalogue)

Later we headed up to Placitas, just northeast of Albuquerque, to the Tunnel Spring Trailhead in the Sandia mountains. The Sandia Crest trail is 26 miles long and is the best trail I've been on this year
Sunday we headed up to Los Alamos to run part of the half-marathon course. It was great. Maureen was running pretty fast so we met up after 5 miles just before the steep climb

After my run I went into town to get drinks. Then Maureen called - she had missed a turn and was a few miles off-course. Fortunately she flagged someone down who was nice enough to drive her back. She pulled up in a big ol' OHV

Fun week and my best running since late November - 48 miles with 6,400'

And to clarify my last post re: work, here is a pic of my bosses JR and Bill Hague
Coyote. We hear them every night about 90 minutes after sunset. Seemed kind of early to see one out and about
Unfortunately the only easy access was through private land and was closed. We drove around looking for another access point but no luck

Came across monuments from the Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass - won by the Union. The Confederacy wanted access to the gold mines of Colorado and California. Note what someone could say were "orbs" in front of the Union monument
Most ironic quote from the battle:

"Come on and help me take that position or stay back and watch men who will"
Confederate Major John Shropshire, just before he was shot between the eyes

We eventually found by accident the Galisteo Basin Preserve - 50 miles of trails just up the road from our house
Since it's so close we've been going there frequently - short speed work, long runs and to allow Hudson to "pick up chicks"
Friday I ran Atalaya Mountain - close to 8 miles with over 1,700'. Did it in 1h 54m and was impressed with myself - until I came home and saw I had done it in 1h 34m last May. Still, I knew it was a good effort since I rolled my ankle

Sunday went back with Maureen and improved the time to 1h 48m after a night of drinking. Obviously an even stronger run as I tripped and tumbled on the way down. Views from the summit
I had always wanted to do these trails and my friend Barb was willing, which was nice. Too many loose dogs up there and I can outrun her
Mining was in the area back in the day but I don't think Sunshine was particularly profitable. Good enough to get by but no gold or silver
Unfortunately I have been rather sloth-like off-and-on since October, especially in Seattle. I blame the wife - she kept buying bags of little Butterfingers and Snickers around Halloween

Santa Fe isn't "Boulder-great" but it's a great place for trail running, is at 7,000' and is sunny. We're back to daily runs and adding distance and elevation. Slowly. Now I just need AT&T to stop requiring me to work sweat-shop hours
